A RECOVERY-FOCUSED HOMELESS INITIATIVE

San Francisco is experiencing a humanitarian crisis. We’re here to deliver a solution.

Homelessness, drug addiction, and untreated mental illness is all around us. But it doesn’t have to be. The Salvation Army believes that every person who wants a way out should have it. On any given night in San Francisco, The Salvation Army provides housing to 750 people who are unstably housed or struggling with addiction.

2026 Lighting The Way Honorees

Rick and Cathy Osgood

For nearly 25 years, Rick and Cathy Osgood have embodied the quiet power of people who show up, not for recognition, but because they believe in the dignity of every human life.

Rick, the retired Founder and Chairman of Pacific Growth Equities, a San Francisco-based investment bank, and Cathy, a retired attorney, could have easily devoted their careers to the corridors of power and prestige. Instead, they chose the Tenderloin.

When Rick and Cathy joined the Salvation Army’s Board, they came with a singular purpose: to help transform one of San Francisco’s most underserved neighborhoods.

Rick led the Board through one of its most ambitious undertakings, chairing it to the successful completion and opening of the Kroc Center, a landmark achievement that brought world-class resources to a community that had long been overlooked.

Cathy, equally visionary, helped establish the Kroc Center’s first Advisory Council and co-led the grand opening celebration, ensuring that the people of the Tenderloin were at the very heart of the moment.

But their commitment didn’t stop at a ribbon cutting. Cathy channeled her legal expertise directly into the lives of those who needed it most, working as an attorney in a groundbreaking partnership between the Salvation Army and a legal aid nonprofit, delivering wraparound social and legal services to residents of Bayview-Hunters Point, meeting people where they were and helping them find a way forward.

Rick served on the Executive Committee that developed and launched The Way Out, the Salvation Army’s bold initiative to create pathways out of poverty and homelessness. And together, Rick and Cathy helped give that initiative one of its most enduring pillars, the Culinary Training Academy, a program that has since transformed the lives of countless individuals by turning a kitchen into a launching pad for a career.

Rick and Cathy Osgood are proof that lasting change is built not in a single moment, but in decades of devotion, in board meetings and legal clinics and quiet collaborations, in the belief that every person deserves a chance to flourish.

We are honored to celebrate them.
